The Consejo Asesor para la Forestación Urbana y de Comunidades de Puerto Rico, Inc. (Puerto Rico Urban and Community Forestry Council) is a nonprofit organization comprised of representatives from government agencies, municipalities, the private sector, nonprofit organizations and community groups.
In 2009, the Council adopted the Five Year Strategic Plan for the Puerto Rico Urban and Community Forestry Program, which includes a commitment to promote the development, management and protection of forest resources and to improve the physical and emotional state of the communities in Puerto Rico, through education, financial assistance and alliances between the public and private sectors.
The Council strives to be a source of technical and program information about the Urban and Community Forestry Program and to serve as an open forum for the discussion of topics related to the protection, conservation, restoration and management of the urban ecosystems via workshops, conferences, meetings and other communication and outreach tools.
The Council also works to educate members of the government and private sector on management practices and conservation of trees and urban forests and to foster collaboration among the Puerto Rico Forest Service Bureau, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, the International Institute of Tropical Forestry of the USDA Forest Service, community groups and private entities.
